So I swear this is more due to a lack of actually updating about upgrades then any actual crazy purchases, but I finally now have my dream editing machine (well I will with a few tiny upgrades).
Anyway due to the luck of the job I have, they had an internal auction for old laptops they were getting rid of due to upgrades. I didn't think much of it at the time when I looked as I thought they prices would go crazy high. However on the last day I took a gander and noticed a 2012 Macbook Pro 15" was still sitting at $400. So I jumped in.
With one small bid, I was able to secure it for $415 easily and can't be happier. The specs did say a failing a hard drive but I already wanted to throw in a SSD anyway so didn't mind at all. The nice specs of this machine I think make it my most powerful machine yet. It has a quad core i7 2.3 Ghz CPU which clocks in on the geek bench over 10,000 which makes it about a little more 1000 more then my old iMac 27". It came with 16gb of RAM with 1600hz. Now my iMac does have the 16gb but only 1333hz so getting a bump there as well. The only hit is a 650m 512mb video card, which goes against my ATI 1gb in the iMac makes it lose. However it is two years newer, and because it is for editing I don't think I will notice one bit. The screen isn't a high-res screen which is maybe the only bummer of it but after I threw in a 500GB SSD, it is a flying machine so can't complain. My hope is that this is going to become my editing machine for on the go editing.
I have a plan to do a movie that will have me on the road, so having a machine that can help cut clips on the go, and has all the USB 3.0 and thunderbolt to keep up with high data is perfect. I think I will throw out the cd drive, and install either 1 TB 7200 rpm or a 2 TB 5400 rpm for extra storage.
Overall I have had good fortune for my machines. My iMac 27" was by no means starting to feel like it was lagging behind however I knew it's time was coming short with the lack of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. My fastest connection was Firewire 800 so can only imagine the waits time I was dealing with.
With the Alienware Alpha now in my life it is a hope I will be playing games more thus posting more but well we all know how that goes.
